TSU_BabiesSince losing her baby Hayes, Kyra Oliver Hitzeman has envisioned a future in which no parent loses a baby to SIDS. The This Side Up campaign is her vehicle to accomplish her mission. At its core, the campaign strives to educate anyone who looks after a baby that babies are at less of a risk for SIDS if put to sleep on their backs for nap or bed time. The campaign is an extension of the national “Back to Sleep” campaign, which has been credited with reducing SIDS by 50 percent since it started in 1994.

The This Side Up campaign is partnering with 12 hospitals in Virginia and Tennessee on this educational effort to raise awareness of SIDS and SIDS prevention through the distribution of adorable baby one-pieces and sleepers that read “This Side Up” on the front and feature other tips to reduce the risk of SIDS on the back. In all, more than 50,000 baby garments are in distribution as of Feb. 2008.
